The Victorians had the answer - the ladies used to withdraw to the withdrawing room after dinner while the gentlemen used to enjoy port,brandy and cigars around the dining room table. It probably would have made far more interesting conversation if one could have suggested to a dinner guest that he ought to sit with the ladies.
