Most of them pinch stuff from the past anyway, take Catherine Tate ( Knitting Circle Sunday, August 14, 2005) “ Oh, How very, very dare you! Me and my mother have been coming here for …blah blah blah”, pinched from Stan Fields 1885 – 1942) Killed whilst performing at the Hackney Empire during and air raid.
In fact I blame the demise of the music hall and variety shows, where comedians had to come up with a constant stream of gags week in week out, those were the good old days of British comedy.
Don’t think we’d see Badiel and Skinner working at such a pace. Takes them two years to come up with a p*ss poor television show let alone a live season performing night after night.
Take this one from Max Miller, 1953 at the Queens first Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium.
I was walking along this mountain pass, so narrow that nobody else could pass you, when I saw this beautiful blonde walking towards me. A beautiful blonde with not a stitch on, yes, not a stitch on, lady! Cor, blimey, I didn’t know whether to toss me self off or block her passage!
Classic cost him a five year ban from the BBC Television and Radio, not a blush from the Queen by all accounts.
