Phyllis Diller was born on July 17, 1917 and was the pioneer of female stand up comedy. Her stage character was a wild-haired and oddly-dressed housewife who believed she was attractive to men, but in reality was quite the opposite, who made jokes about a husband named "Fang" while smoking from a long cigarette holder. Her distinctive look and cackling laugh has made her one of the best-recognized comedians in comedy. Whilst know for her stand up show, Diller also appeared in film and made regular appearances as a special guest on TV shows during the 60's. She also wrote a number of books such as a 'Lampshade in a Whorehouse; 'Phyllis Diller's Marriage Manual' and 'The Joys of Ageing and How to Avoid Them'. She continued to perform until ill health forced her into retirement, but recently appeared in the American reality show 'Last Comic Standing' in July 2006.
A typical Diller joke had her running after a garbage truck pulling away from her curb. "Am I too late?" she'd yell. The driver's reply: "No, jump right in!"
